Remote Desktop 2 Connection Limit

29. November 2007

This tip saved my butt today at work...

Ever need to get a remote desktop connection to the prod, dev, or test server and hit the "exceeded the maximum number of allowable connections" message?  Are you tired of walking over to the other side of the office or shouting over your cubicle wall at otherwise rational adults who are needlessly hogging the connections?  Then here is a quick and easy solution for you (mileage may vary based on circumstances):

mstsc /v:{sever address} /f -console

This gets you on through a console session.  So boot the offending idle connections via Terminal Services Manager, get out, and hook up using your regular remote desktop connection shortcut.  Voila!  You are back in business with a good connection.

Final note:  Don't tell anyone else about it or it is sure to be abused like the other 2 connections already are.  Good thing nobody reads this blog!  :)
